Bio-Structural Integration™: Chronic Inflammation (Pain)

Bio-Structural Integration sets the new standard of rehabilitation that is unique, effective and provides quick relief of pain! It is a unique, trademarked process at Osteoklinika!

Over 15 years ago we discovered that therapy centered around only one system simply does not work. Why? The body functions as a unit. When we get injured the central nervous system may be affected, the joints will develop misalignment, the muscles will be in spasm, connective tissue and fascia become tight, the inflammatory process sets in, even internal organs can be affected. Every cell in our body works synergetically together to maintain homeostasis.
When one system is disturbed the other cannot function properly. In our method of Bio-Structural Integration™ we address the dysfunction at every level.  Within one treatment Cranial Osteopathy is used to release central nervous system lesions. After that Osteopathic Structural Adjustments are used to correct the joints, followed by Myofascial Release of connective tissue.  Neuromuscular Massage is implemented to reduce muscular tension, and Electrotherapy helps to interrupt the pain cycle.
If you have tried every possible known therapy and still have pain, you shouldn't give up!
Avoid these foods to reduce the pain and enhance the quality of your life:
  • Limit Sugar and AVOID Artificial Sweeteners
  • Avoid Large Quantities of Caffeine
  • Nightshade Vegetables
  • Avoid Yeast and Gluten
  • Refined Carbohydrates (Carbs)
  • Watch Out For Food Additives
  • Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco
  • Processed Vegetable Oils

Most vegetable oils such as canola and corn oil contain too much omega-6 fatty acids. They trigger inflammation and should be avoided. Opt for healing omega-3 rich oils, seeds, and nuts instead fish oil, olive oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, etc). Omega-3 will help you to reduce inflammation and pain. Read here more about the amazing health benefits of omega-3.

Eliminate Processed and Fast Food!

If you suffer from chronic pain try and eliminate these foods for a few weeks and see what happens. See what works for you. Try cutting them out one by one or gradually. Also increase your consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats to reduce inflammation and pain. If you’re feeling up for it, try a vegan lifestyle and increase your intake of raw vegetables as well. They are packed with antioxidants to prevent cell damage.

Chronic Inflammation (Pain)

Fybromyalgia Pain Spots
Fibromyalgia and arthritis are very common forms of chronic pain (or chronic inflammation) that can linger for years and reduce the quality of life. Chronic pain is often difficult to treat and medication can only reduce the pain, fatigue, and other symptoms a bit. And let’s not forget that those drugs come with plenty of other side-effects that often cause more problems than they solve.
Therefore many patients are turning to lifestyle and diet changes to find relief. Many fibromyalgia or chronic pain sufferers are sensitive to certain foods that often don’t show up in food allergy tests. Although there are not many tests linking chronic pain to diet, many people report more pain and stiffness when they eat certain foods.

Researchers believe that oversensitive nerve cells may be involved in the process. They believe that certain foods trigger the release of neurotransmitters that may worsen food and pain sensitivity.
High insulin levels can worsen pain and inflammation. Limit all sugars and hidden sugars from your diet. If you want to consume fruits, opt for whole fresh fruits and avoid fruit juices. Although artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sorbitol, and xylitol are sugar-free, they contain other compounds that can mess up your sensitivity to pain and can trigger irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Chronic pain or fibromyalgia is often linked to inadequate sleep and fatigue. So most patients get tempted to drink more coffee to get them through the day. Although a caffeine shot may seem to work, it can do more harm than good in the long run. Caffeine can linger in your system long after you had your energy shot and may cause sleeping issues at night.

Veggies are low in calories and super healthy, but if you are a chronic pain sufferer, you should limit nightshade vegetables to an absolute minimum. These foods contain a particular group of substances called alkaloids, that can impact nerve-muscle function and digestive function. These foods may cause health problems in individuals who are especially sensitive to these alkaloid substances. They are known to trigger arthritis and worsen pain.  Nightshade veggies include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and many species of sweet and hot peppers.

Yeast and gluten can be found in many baked goods and can cause the growth of yeast fungus which may contribute to pain. Also many fibromyalgia patients seem to be more prone to gluten sensitivities.

Eliminate Dairy

Dairy and other animal products contain a special type of protein that may contribute to arthritis or fibromyalgia. This protein irritates the tissue around joints and can worsen pain. Many chronic pain sufferers have solved their issues by going vegan. But for many of us that’s just a step too far. Instead of going 100% vegan try to get your protein through nut milks, beans, lentils, and quinoa, as much as possible. See what works for you. And if you eat meat, opt for organic meat.

Carbs, just as sugars, will increase insulin levels and may worsen fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions. So opt for a low-carb, low-sugar plant based diet as much as possible.

Food additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) cause more problems for patients with chronic pain. They stimulate pain receptors and increase pain. MSG is a high-sodium flavor often added to fast food and pre-packaged foods to improve their taste. Again opt for fresh, whole foods and make sure to read your labels and especially avoid these 10 toxic food ingredients. READ THE FOOD LABELS CAREFULLY!

These can lead to all sorts of ailments, including some that affect your joints. Smokers are at higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, while people who drink alcohol on a daily basis have a higher risk of developing gout.

Eliminate from fast or processed foods. More often than not, they contain sugar, artificial sweeteners, omega-6-rich oils, processed grains, high levels of sodium, additives, and other harmful compounds.
Rehabilitative Yoga Pose

Exercise and Yoga

Regular, mild exercising should be something you should also consider. Gentle yoga stretches or rehabilitative yoga have shown great results at Osteoklinika (see Bio-Structural Integration™ treatment).

Calling All Athletes! Ask Us About Laser Therapy and Bio-Structural Integration™

Neuromuscular Massage is implemented to reduce muscular tension, and Electrotherapy helps to interrupt the pain cycle.

All of the above is done within a 1 hour treatment. After the structure is realigned, we recommend BioFlex Low Intensity Laser Therapy to deal with inflammation. Now the healing is stimulated at the cellular level. This session may take 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the condition being treated. Elimination of inflammatory process assists in structural stabilization of the joints.
The program of rehabilitation is around 5 weeks long and provides consistently over 90% of success in bringing back a pain-free life. If you have tried every possible known therapy and still have pain, you shouldn't give up! During many years of my practice I developed protocols for numerous difficult- to-treat conditions in athletes.

Laser Therapy for Athletes

Laser therapy offers a non-invasive, pain free, therapeutic option that can effectively address the common challenges of the avid athlete. In particular, Laser Therapy is beneficial for the acceleration of muscle tissue repair as well as the reduction of muscle fatigue. Through the stimulation of the cellular mitochondria and muscle satellite cells, Laser Therapy can ultimately delay the development of skeletal muscle fatigue, improve skeletal muscle performance, prevent muscle damage and reduce pain in the case of injury. These clinical effects are of great relevance to professional and recreational athletes and could have dramatic implications for sports performance in the future.

Equestrienne: Hilary

Hilary is a 17 year old equestrienne whose horse rolled on her, applying a generous portion of its thousand pound weight to her hip joint. The injury left her with a limp, steady and severe pain, and an audible and visible click with each step. This was her condition when she came in for an assessment, accompanied by her admittedly sceptical mother.

Hilary’s mother scanned around the clinic and saw the grateful testimonials and celebrity athletes’ photos. Her first thought was, “Why is all this necessary? Why are they trying so hard to convince me this works?” Each previous specialist who had examined her daughter had pronounced her case “unique”—meaning wholly unprecedented and without any established treatment protocol. After varied, unsuccessful treatment attempts, Hilary was left to get on with her life, accompanied by painkillers. Eventually, she was also given antidepressants to try to alleviate her sense of hopelessness. An understandably discouraging outcome for an active young person.

Hilary's assessment: “There was extensive soft tissue damage in the hip and thigh area, and the joint capsule of the hip was damaged such that the head of the femur almost popped out with every step. Orthopedic surgeons hadn't been able to heal this injury. It’s always sad to see a young person—or any person— given a heavy load of pharmaceuticals. While I didn't promise her mother any guaranteed outcome, I did tell her that I was sure we could improve Hilary’s quality of life.”

After four treatments, there was such a significant improvement in Hilary’s pain that she quit her meds. Her limp was also improving and the "skeptical" Mom noticed “a bounce in her step” when she walked to the car from the clinic one day—something she hadn’t seen since before the riding accident.

Dr. Kahn concludes, “Hilary continued treatments three times a week until she achieved 100% of her normal gait and has remained free of medication. Indeed, she’s resumed a completely normal existence.”

Final word goes to Mom: “As a parent, it’s very difficult to see your child in pain; to see her limping and having difficulty taking stairs. Hilary had been treated as a lost cause because of her non-response to other forms of therapy. What do I say to skeptics? Only that I have no problem giving my own testimonial now and having it displayed. I saw an amazing and dramatic improvement in such a short period of time…it’s incredible.”

Laser Therapy on Muscle Tissue

Athletes, people with injured muscles, and patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy may all benefit from the use of low intensity laser therapy.  LILT has recently expanded to cover areas of medicine that were not previously thought of as the usual applications such as:  wound healing and inflammatory orthopedic conditions.

One of these novel application areas is for muscle fatigue and muscle injury. Since it is becoming agreed that mitochondria are the principal photo-acceptors present inside cells, and it is known that muscle cells are exceptionally rich in mitochondria, this suggests that LILT should be highly beneficial in muscle injuries.

The ability of LILT to stimulate stem cells and progenitor cells means that muscle satellite cells may respond well to LILT and help muscle repair. Furthermore the ability of LILT to reduce inflammation and lessen oxidative stress is also beneficial in cases of muscle fatigue and injury. This review covers the literature relating to LILT and muscles in both pre-clinical animal experiments and human clinical studies.

Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants 2014!

Shoulder Injuries in Baseball Pitchers

So many careers are cut short due to shoulder injury and Laser Therapy offers a therapeutic intervention that could increase the longevity of a baseball pitchers career.
Baseball pitchers are exposed to extremes of stress, imposed in throwing a ball at speeds over 100 km per hour. These movements subject a number of anatomical regions to repetitive motion type injuries, including the shoulder, elbow, cervical and thoracolumbar spine. As might be anticipated, the most common and most serious injuries sustained by pitchers involve the shoulder joint. The reasons for this are quite obvious. From an anatomical perspective, the shoulder joint and the surrounding tissues are structurally complex, highly mobile and involved in most upper body movements.

At Osteoklinika, we feel a more rational and elegant therapy would be to adopt the following strategy:

  • Shoulder anatomy highlighting the nerves and muscles of the shoulder joint
  • The administration of Laser Therapy daily
  • Massage as indicated
  • The initiation of gentle stretching 1-2 weeks post injury
  • Rest (during early phase of injury)
Combining the healing potential of laser, nature (i.e. time) and other conservative measures, over 90% of all pitchers post injury could be returned to normal functional levels, if this strategy were to be followed.

My approach is very unique and effective. It took me many years to develop specific trademarked protocols to treat conditions affecting the lower back, shoulders, knees, feet, wrists and other parts of the body.

Laser Therapy Insights

Ruth, is an active retiree. At one time she was losing her ability to engage in every day functions due to severe pain in her hips, hands, cervical and lumbar spine. After years of extensive drug therapy and searching for a solution, she discovered Low Intensity laser therapy and received laser therapy treatments in Toronto.

Her husband brought her an article by Dr. Gifford Jones had written and I finally decided to call Meditech and made the appointment and she has "never looked back"!

The therapy:

- acts as an analgesic
- has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect
- stimulates the immune system
- regulates new healthy cells

Experts say it eliminates pain and other symptoms.

It is a very sophisticated architectural design. Low Light Laser Therapy is used to treat a wide spectrum of conditions that may be chronic or acute, degenerative or traumatic in origin. It is particularly useful in treating severe sports injuries, low back problems, traumatic injuries and degenerated conditions of the knees.

A typical laser treatment consists of three steps:

- visable red light
- invisable infra-red light
- the appication of laser probe where it is used manually in the area.
"I use Bio-Flex Laser system in my practice to help speed up the healing of soft tissue injuries and degenerative osteoarthritis." - Dr. S. Milley
An increasing number of physicians, physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, chiropractors, naturopaths, dentists and veterinarians, worldwide are using Bio-Flex Laser Therapy. Fred Kahn of Meditech says, over one million Bio-Flex treatments have been administered to patients - all without any significant adverse effects.
"The change is dramatic. I have my life back - I am able to walk easily, play the piano and do normal activities. I am no longer taking a handful of pills and injections of methotrexate for arthritis.  It is just wonderful!" - Ruth Muxworthy
Technology of Low Light Laser

The technology utilizes super-luminous and laser diodes to irradiate diseased or traumatized tissue with photons. These particles of energy are selectively absorbed by the cell membrane and intra-cellular molecules, resulting in the initiation of a cascade of complex physiological reactions, leading to the restoration of normal cell structure and function.

The process is curative and therefore results in the elimination of symptoms including pain. In addition, it enhances the body's immune system response and facilitates natural healing.

The therapy is completely safe and has no adverse side effects.

Bio-Structural Integration™: Scoliosis or Curve in Spine

A Letter to Andrew Subieta:  Scoliosis

Look for these signs in your child

My niece Ashley suffered painfully from significant spinal curvature from scoliosis limiting her mobility. Hospital specialists left Ashley completely on her own with the following unhelpful advice: “Exercise more, no treatment is necessary and when your condition gets worse, you will qualify for surgery.”

Ashley saw Andrew when she was 14 during the critical window of time when scoliosis could still be improved significantly. By age 15, Ashley’s scoliosis curve was no longer noticeable. When I asked Ashley, now 17, how Andrew’s treatments changed her life, she said:

“My posture and mobility improved. My back pain and headaches are gone. The laser therapy healed my dislocated knee. My gym class grade improved from C to A. My proudest moment was when I dragged a 180 lb. guy with a rope from one end of the gym to the other!!!”

Andrew’s treatments are extremely effective because he’s the only osteopath in Canada who skillfully combines osteopathy, massage, electrotherapy and low intensity laser therapy. Andrew has that rare magic touch, intuitively performing osteopathy like a gifted artist.

Ashley’s younger sister Lauren, age 13 also went to see Andrew because her spine was significantly twisted to one side from scoliosis. Now Lauren’s spine is completely straight. Lauren often fell asleep during the massage part of treatment as soothing jazz, opera or classical music played in Andrew’s cozy office. If you have children with scoliosis, don’t wait until it’s too late - go see Andrew now! - Shirley of Thornhill, Ontario #scoliosis #osteoklinika#andrewsubieta #twistedspine

Bio-Structural Integration™: Exaggerated Pelvic Tilt

New studies have indicated that too much sitting will shorten your life, especially if you are a woman! One study found that women who sit for more than 6 hours per day are about 40% more likely to die, that those who sat for less than 3 hours a day, compared to men at 20% more likely to die.  IT CAN KILL YOU!

Grim Long Term Effects of:
  • Watching TV
  • Playing Video Games on TV or computer
  • Sitting in your car while commuting
  • Computer use at work during the day and at night at home
In addition to the grim long term effects of so much sitting, a sitting posture causes your hip flexors and quadriceps muscles to become shortened.  This will put your pelvis into an exaggerated tilt. This tilt can put stress on the musculature of the lower back resulting in tightening of the posterior chain (hamstrings and calves), an increase in the possibility of disc herniation as well as a host of other posture and load distribution related injuries.  All you need is the desire to get more mobile!  In fact, I have heard from some of my patients they stand up whenever they can; sometimes even working on the computer in a standing position or  on a phone call from time to time. Certainly getting up regularly from the work and home computer walking around for a few minutes every hour (every 20 minutes is recommended) is a great way to avoid serious pelvis tilt.  In addition, a few minutes an evening, 2-3 times a week, can help to offset the poor metabolic heath and structural problems.

Be creative, walk to the store at night, park far away from your destination and walk a few seconds longer, eat a small meal at lunch and then go for a walk, avoid sitting one solid hour during your lunch break.
However, for some it has gone too far. You may be experiencing chronic pain and difficulty sleeping due to too much sitting. There are so many serious health hazards associated with too much sitting and if you are unable at this stage to cope with the pain or the inability to bend to do your gardening or simple household duties, even minor exercise, then I can help you at OsteoKlinika Pain Management and Rehabilitation clinic.

Are you sitting all day long, and into the evening on the computer or on a couch watching TV or playing video games?  I believe this has become quite a problem in the 21st Century.  Sedentary behaviours include sitting in many different settings:

How much time do you spend sitting?

All these repetitive ways of sitting during our busy lives are examples of very how little energy we are expending during the course of a single day.  It’s time to pay attention to how long you are sitting during each day and night!

During the course of an entire day, repeated throughout weeks and months, accumulated sitting time may have negative consequences for your health. Recent evidence reports associations between television time and poor metabolic health, indicating that overall sitting time is related to increased health risk caused by higher waist circumferences, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, plasma glucose, and fasting insulin, as well as lower high-density lipoprotein, which are biomarkers of obesity and cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.

If you are doing a training program, you may find you are not able to get a full hip extension in your exercises, such as squats or running and will therefore feel stiffer and less energetic than is normal. A few key exercises for a few minutes 2-3 times per week can help to offset this problem. Attending regular Yoga classes are also a great way to offset all the sitting, as a further example.

And, if you or your children are playing video games for hours per day, it is great to know there are now great video games that promote a wide variety of activity, such as the Wii Sports, Xbox Kinnect, all of which will help to get you and your family up on your feet!  Seriously, all this sitting can kill you!

Bio-Structural Integration™: Diet and Pain Management

  • Bio-Structural Integration™:  Diet and Pain Management

Example of "Bad" Food Choices
Many of us are now aware that diet is a basic means of pain control. Good food choices can subdue pain and pain’s side effects: listlessness, fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, and digestive problems. Unhealthy eating, on the other hand, will increase your suffering and need for medication.

Eat 5 - 6 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables! If your body is worn down by pain – if you suffer from frequent illness, fatigue, or weakness – fruits and vegetables can act as tonics, strengthening your body with an array of nutrients. Your body will especially appreciate the benefits of phytochemicals, plant substances that bolster the immune system. For the most phytochemical, eat a mix of produce that is richly colored, such as berries, red grapes, leafy greens, carrots, pumpkins, tomatoes, and peaches. By eating these fruits and vegetables, you could even affect pain on the cellular level: Certain substances in deeply colored produce appear to stabilize the cell membranes, making them less likely to produce substance P and other pain-promoting compounds.

For pain relief, think green!

Eat the right fats!

Do your joints feel hot and tender? Is your chronic pain characterized by a burning quality? Do you suffer from PMS pain? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, the kinds of fats you eat can make the difference between a flare-up and significant relief. That’s because some fats increase inflammation, while others cool it down. Normally, inflammation is your body’s response to an injury. When inflammation develops in the absence of an injury, it becomes a chronically painful problem. Inflammation pain is a sign that certain hormones in your body, called prostaglandins, are out of balance. Prostaglandins come in two types: One encourages inflammation, while the other inhibits it. Since both kinds are constructed from fatty acids, the kind of prostaglandins that predominate in your body depends to a large extent on the kinds of fats you eat.

Anti-inflammatory fats

  •  Eggs fortified with omega-3 fatty acids
  •  Flaxseed and flaxseed oil
  •  Herring
  •  Pumpkin seeds
  •  Mackerel
  •  Olive oil
  •  Salmon
  •  Sardines
  •  Walnuts

Pro-inflammatory fats

  • Butter
  • Corn oil
  • Full-fat dairy products, such as whole milk and ice cream
  • Margarine (please do not eat margarine - in any situation!)
  • Sesame oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Tropical oils (such as coconut, palm and palm kernel oil)
  • Vegetable shortening (same as Marg - don't use it!)

Substitute white bread & rice with whole grains!

Whole grains are a source of many nutrients important for a vital immune system and for pain control, including B-complex vitamins. They are also high in magnesium, which relaxes cramped muscles, and in fiber, which reduces constipation from irritable bowel syndrome or pain medications. By contrast, refined products, especially sweet baked goods, cause terrible flare-ups. Avoiding refined grains may stabilize your nerves and keep them from firing extra or intensified messages of pain. Remember that pain lives in the central nervous system, so the extent to which you can keep it on an even keel is the extent to which you’ll feel better.

Multi-symptom triggers!

The following list includes the foods most often identified in research studies as triggers for migraines, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and fibromyalgia.

  • Dairy products
  • Wheat
  • Citrus fruits
  • Corn
  • Caffeine
  • Meat
  • Nuts
  • Tomatoes

It is possible that PAIN is simply a CHOICE and you can make that choice?

  • Try to shift a few of the "pain-maker" foods into your good food choices! For the most part, PAIN IS A CHOICE (to have or not to have).
